Question: I am a 47 year old female, approx 200 lbs 5'3. Lab test show normal except for high ranges in these categories HDL 59; SGPT 36; Triglicerides 223 and VLDL 45. My father had a heart attack at age 55 and when I read online these items could all be associated with heart problems. Is this correct?

Brief Answer:
Moderate risk for coronary heart disease

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about having heart disease since your father had a heart attack at a young age. Your labs do show that you have a moderate elevation in triglycerides and this is the fat that can be the easiest to reduce. Most triglycerides do come from diet and just by reducing the fat in your diet you can reduce the risk. The good thing is that you have a high HDL. The HDL is actually a good thing as it protects your heart. I think of HDL as a the big vacuum cleaner cleaning the arteries and helping to clear your blood from the bad cholesterol. The VLDL is mildly elevated and again should improve with improved diet alone.

The SGPT level is a liver enzyme that is probably elevated due to the high triglycerides. The triglycerides are being deposited into the liver and this is squeezing out and killing liver cells. To help reduce this from happening doing the low fat diet and reducing your triglycerides will reverse that process.

In summary
1. High triglycerides potential for heart and liver disease
2. High HDL is protective and a good thing
3. High VLDL is only mildly elevated
4. High SGPT is a result of fat depositing into the liver
5. Overall treatment diet in low fat
6. Regular exercise
7. Repeat labs in 3 months
