What Does The Presence Of Blood In Urine Indicate?
Question: I recently had a urine test with trace of blood intact. I also had a trace in my urine on my last test in 2011. The analysis showed RBC of 3-5. Is this anything to worry about? I'm a 55 year old woman.
Brief Answer:
Not significant. Nothing to worry about.
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for using HCM.
I went through your post.
Anything above 5 RBC per high power field should be considered abnormal and may indicate microscopic hematuria.
Yours is 3-5 RBC per high power field which is not considered significant in the absence of any associated symptoms or any medical illness.
So there is nothing to worry about.
I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your time. I was all worried because the doctor I saw said sometimes blood in urine is a sign of bladder cancer but he didn't suggest any follow up, but then I read several sites where a trace of blood in urine in women was quite common.
Brief Answer:
Yes quite common in women

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me with more questions.
Blood in urine is called hematuria. There are many different causes for hematuria. Urinary bladder cancer is just one of the causes. Even a simple urinary tract infection can cause hematuria.
Hematuria can be either gross which is visible to naked eye or microscopic hematuria which diagnosed by urinalysis. Microscopic hematuria is diagnosed when the RBC is more than 5 per high power field.
Anything less than 5 can be considered insignificant.
And as told in my previous post, you have less than 5. It is not significant and as you said it is quite common in women.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
