What Does This MRI Report Indicate?
Question: Hello Doctor,
I have done MRI for my brother, who is special child - mentally retarded. As I seen many latest technology came so now again trying to go for the understanding the problem and if any treatment. Brother is normal but slightly ill 15% as confirmed in doctor certificate
in recent MRI findings two things observed :
1. A few small gliotic foci in bilateral periventricular white matter.
2.No acute focal parenchymal lesion or hydrocephalus
Need advise and understanding on both observation.

Hi....I understand your concern. I have gone through MRI report fully. Coming to your queries -
1. The changes in the MRI report are suggestive of lack of proper oxygen supply to the brain when he was in mother's womb.
2. The gliotic focus means that there is a scar formation like thing in the brain due to early damage. It might be a focus for seizures.
3. Another point which I observed is that there is bilateral maxillary sinus polyps. These might cause symptoms similar to allergy or Asthma in the future.
4. Currently there is no curative therapy for your brother's problem. The options are good seizure control, physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
