What Does This Blood Report Indicate?

Thalassemia minor should be ruled out
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for asking on this platform
I have seen the reports.
It shows that the hemoglobin level is low(9.8) as age.Condition with low hemoglobin is called 'Anemia'.
The most common cause of anemia in this age is due to nutritional iron deficiency.
In iron deficiency anemia the marrow can not produce enough RBC's and these RBC's are small in size; so RBC count and MCV both will be low.
This report shows that RBC count is normal and MCV,MCH and MCHC is low.
This is against iron deficiency anemia.
In thalassemia there is defect in hemoglobin synthesis. Here the number of RBC's produced are normal but these are small in size and more fragile.
So in this condition RBC count will be normal with low MCV,MCH and MCHC;as in this report.
Again the RDW is raised which is again suggestive of iron deficiency anemia.
The other values in hemogram like total leucocyte count and differential leucocyte count are within normal limit.I wont get worried for monocyte and eosinophil counts as it is not significant.
So in brief the report is not conclusive and giving mixed picture of thalassemia and iron deficiency anemia.
I would like to get HPLC test done to rule out thalassemia and iron profile(including serum ferritin) for iron deficiency anemia.
The other vaules like CRP which is an indicator of infection and TTG value which if raised suggests celiac disease are within normal limit.
Please let me know if you have any more query.
