Question: Hello,
I have very high cholesterol levels (my test results are attached).
I'm 36 years old. I don't smoke, don't drink my blood pressure is 110/65 I don't have diabetes.
Do you think I should commence using statins? A few years ago I had 2 episodes of elevated liver enzymes and the cause was not identified. I'm concerned that statins might harm my liver.
Maybe I could use Zetia instead.
Please advise

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should commence statins

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Do you have any family history of hyperlipidemia, are you overweight or any unhealthy food habits.
Your cholesterol is elevated and is less likely to respond only to lifestyle, so it's better to start with statins. It can although cause elevated liver enzymes but it's less common. Also, ezetimibe also can cause similar problems. So it's better to start with tab Rosuvastatin 10 mg bedtime and measure liver enzymes and cpk levels after a week, then can be repeated after the month. If there is no elevation then can be safely continued. Lipid profile to be repeated after 8 weeks.
You should have a healthy lifestyle like avoiding fatty, oily and high calorie diet. Regular exercises like brisk walking, jogging according your capacity atleast 30 min a day and 5 days a week. Lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, fish once or twice a week, avoid meat.
Hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.
