Question: My brother had a chest X-ray and the results read: linear atelectasis is seen bilaterally. What does that mean?

I can understand your concern.

There are several explanations linear bibasal atelectasis .

They may be seen in healthy obese subjects.

They also may be a sign of lung overload of liquids from cardiac problems or renal ones.

They may be encountered in pulmonary embolism.

Nevertheless all of the above conditions are strongly related to his clinical signs and symptoms (if he has breathlessness, cough,fatigue,fever, blood in sputum etc)
