What Does This Follicular Study Report Indicate?
PID might cause difficulty to conceive and chronic pain in pelvis
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. A follicular study tells us to track the maturity of a follicle in the ovary called the dominant follicle till the time it releases the egg.
2. When the egg is released, at that time the chances are good to conceive a child.
3. In your case, the follicle is maturing in the right ovary and the size of dominant follicle is 16 x 14 mm on 14 th day. This means that the follicle will rupture and the egg will be released in few days. This means the next one week might be a good time for you to conceive.
4. The small amount of fluid in the scan is located behind the uterus. This is a small quantity of fluid and it might be due to mild infection in the pelvic organs including uterus. This is called as PID or pelvic inflammatory disease and is not a serious concern. However the PID might require treatment with medicine if you are having symptoms like white discharge.
5. PID might include the following symptoms
(i) Irregular periods
(ii) Pain especially in your lower abdomen and pelvis with or without fever
(iii) Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor
(iv) Painful sexual intercourse
(v) Painful or burning urination
6. PID usually happens due to infection in the genital organs. Sometimes there might be PID without any symptoms which is commonly seen in chlamydia infection. It can cause temporary problem to conceive and is treated with a short course of antibiotics.
7. Please discuss the report with your doctor and take treatment if require after clinical evaluation.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
Fallopian tubes might be affected due to PID
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
1. The fallopian tubes might get blocked due to PID and this causes difficulty to conceive. To know if your fallopian tubes are normal there is a test called HSG hysterosalpingography. In this a small amount of contrast is instilled in to the uterus and then the movement of the contrast is tracked along the fallopian tubes. If you are getting investigated for possible infertility then your doctor might tell you to get this test done at a particular time which is approximately on the 10 th day of your period.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

I had my pelvis ultrasound in the month of Feb-15 during that time doctor has mentioned that my POD is clear. but in this follicular study minimal fluid is found and i read it some where that this minimal fluid can be of ovulation.
i got my 4th ultrasound of follicular study and my doctor told me that your follicular got ruptured and endometrial thickness is of 9mm. i want to know when it got ruptured and the best time for intercourse so that i would conceive. in the 3rd ultrasound the size of follicular was of 16*14 mm.
and today i have backache alongwith, slight pain in the right of lower abdomen since morning.
Follicle rupture happened in last 24 hours
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
1. If your previous ultrasound scan showed POD clear and you do not have any symptoms then it is less likely that you have PID. Small amount of fluid is found in POD during ovulation. In some patients, very small amount of fluid in POD cannot be explained routinely.
2. Small fluid in POD is found at the time of ovulation. As your doctor doing follicular scan confirms the rupture of follicle it is possible that the follicle got ruptured in previous 24 hours, therefore this is a good time to have sexual intercourse with your partner. Please have regular sexual intercourse for at least 5 days from today for positive results.
3. Mild backache occurs during ovulation in some women. If the backache is severe then please consult your doctor and take pain relief.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
