What Does This Liver Function Test Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, I've had a high liver function test result (over 100) My doctor wants to repeat this. I have previously been quite a heavy drinker over a few years, but I have recently cut back on the alcohol and I'm eating a much healthier diet. How long could it take for the test result to be "normal" and is there anything else I can do to speed this up?
Thank you
doctor

Brief Answer:
Please upload full report of LFT.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

It is important to which parameter of liver function test(LFT) is over 100 means whether it is related to SGPT, GGT, Alkaline phosphatase etc.
Please let me know so that I can interpret the findings in a better way.

Good morning,

Thank you for your reply. I'm afraid I don't have any further information, my GP just said the LVT result was high (101).
Is there anything you can suggest without the information you mentioned?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
It may be related to SGPT or GGT.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

It may be related to SGPT or GGT as you have history of alcohol intake.

It is good that you have reduced alcohol intake. You should try to totally avoid it.
It is good that you have modified your diet. You should also avoid fried and fatty food.

Increased SGPT or GGT indicates liver injury.
You need few more investigations like routine hemogram, random blood sugar, lipid profile, viral markers, urine RE/ME.
Ultrasound of abdomen should be done to assess liver.

In elevated SGPT/GGT,I suggest my patients to take tablet ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg twice daily for three months. It will help in regeneration of liver cells.
It may take 3-4 months for complete recovery.

Hope I have answered your question.

Hello,

I don't really want to tell my GP about my previous alcohol consumption if possible. Is there an over the counter alternative to the medication you have suggested?
I have now cut out alcohol completely, I do not need fried or processed foods and I drink plenty of water and also herbal teas.
I was planning on having the repeat blood test in 3-4 weeks. Even if it was not returned to normal do you think there would be an improvement in that time?
