Brief Answer:
would not cause any clinical problems

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The normal platelet count range can vary slightly from lab to lab. In some labs the range is from 150 to 400.
The range is only approximate, it is possible to have values slightly below or slightly above the normal limit with no clinical implications.

A value of 131 would not affect clotting and would not cause an increased risk of bleeding.

The platelet value would have to be very low to be associated with bleeding, usually less than 100.

The causes of low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) are: (1) infections- platelet play a part in inflammation and can be decreased or increased in inflammation

(2)side effect of some medications

(3)alcohol can affect platelet counts by suppressing the bone marrow and also by reducing vitamin b 12 levels

(4)low vitamin b12 and folate

(5)leukemia and lymphoma- in these conditions, the platelet count would be a lot lower and there would also be additional problems with other parts of the full blood count.

Summary: though the level is below normal range, it would not be associated with any problems with clotting

Your doctor may likely consider monitoring the level with full blood counts are 6 monthly or yearly intervals if needed.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I really do appreciate it. I am an extremely pessimistic (read hypochondriac) person who, when I see any out of limit value on a blood (or other) test I immediately think worst case scenario. I've been known to make copies of MRIs and read them myself, get access to blood tests and read the results myself, and have friends who are physicians order outrageous tests for me. It helps that I am a scientist at a biomedical research unit. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

I've had the 24-hour versions of many fatal diseases LOL

Thanks so much. I will try to remember that some people have real problems and stop whining. Sometimes I think I feel this way because I feel I have been too luck and something will end up taking it away. It's a typical Jewish neurosis.
