Question: Hi doctor, I am a 25 year old female, unmarried. I did not have my period for 5 months, but had it this month. Blood test, urine test, t3-t4-tsh test and FSH, LH, PRL tests all came out normal. My abdominal scan indicated that "right ovary shows small cystic changes, right ovary mildly enlarged (12cc), Bilateral ovaries revealed small follicles". I have hair growth on chin, upper lip and chest. I was suggested krimson 35 for a year . since I had my normal period now, should I be taking this medicine which might have side effects?. Is it possible to regulate my periods through diet and excercize?

Brief Answer:
Polycystic ovarian syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,

From your symptoms and scan report it is almost sure that you have Polycystic ovarian Syndrome(PCOS).

Diet and exercise are the initial and important modalities of treatment of PCOS.

You have not mentioned your weight and if the test of serum Fasting insulin has been done, if so, it's result?

Oral contraceptive pills are good to regularize the periods and for excessive hair growth and they are quite safe to take for long term, till you decide to have children.

Do not worry about it's side effects.

Do get a good diet plan from a dietitian and attempt weight loss.

A 5% weight loss can completely reverse the hormonal imbalance and you may have regular periods.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer doctor. As for your question,my weight is 48kg, heigth is 5'1" and serum Fasting insulin test has not been done. So, do you recommend me to start the given medication as weight loss may not be an option for me. Also, it would be helpful if you can let me know any precautions that I can take during medication and in future to avoid the same.
Thanks again for the help

Brief Answer:
get fasting insulin

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

In that case the oral contraceptive pills will be an excellent option for you. They do not have any side effects and you can take them long term safely.

Get the fasting insulin test to know if you have insulin resistance in which case metformin will be more suitable.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
