Brief Answer:
castration is surgical removal of both testis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
Castration is surgical removal of both testicles or gonadectomy, for your knowledge.

This is one option, in people with prostate cancer, unfit for radical prostatectomy,or not willing to undergo radical surgery.

Those who are unwilling for this form of treatment, have an option of medical castration, with androgen blocking, hormone analogues, like Leuprolide( Eligard ).
This is taken along with bicalutamide, for complete androgen blockade.

Hope this is the clarification you sought in my previous reply.

Wish you good health.
You're welcome to seek any other information you may want, from an Urologist.

Brief Answer:
castration is done by surgical or pharmacological means.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

Castration means blocking action of male hormone called testosterone, produced in the testis, by surgical or pharmacological means.

Surgical removal of both testis,is called orchidectomy or gonadectomy.
It's a minor surgical operation, done as a day case, under local anesthesia usually.
All Urologists have performed, number of surgical castrations.

Pharmacological castration is done by injecting LHRH analogues, like Leuprolide(Eligard).
This is given monthly or every 3 months.
This also blocks the male hormone(testosterone).

Castration is usually done in prostate or testicular cancer.
Rarely, this is also done in trauma, involving both testis.

Hope your doubts are cleared.
