What Is Intestinal Angiodysplasia?

Question: what is intestinal angiodysplasia? My father was hospitalized on 10/11/14. I talked with the Dr today and he gave me that description, and said look it up on the internet! Thanks Doc
Brief Answer:
Considerations
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for sending the query,
What this means basically is that the current alignment of blood vessels in the intestines are such that occasionally it might lead to episodes of bleeding or oozing of blood.
If the angiodysplasia is extensive enough it may lead to a situation where surgery may be needed.
It really depends on how severe the anemia which may be associated with the angioduysplasia atually is.
I hope this was somewhat helpful and if you have any additional specific concerns I would be happy to address those with you as well.
Sincerely,
Dr. Galamaga

When he checked into the hospital his Hemoglobin level was 5. He was given 4 units of blood, which raised his level to 10 this morning. He entered the hospital with breathing difficulties, and through testing and observation when trying to relieve constipation problem the blood in stools was discovered. Could he have ruptured a blood vessel during straining or passing the difficult stools?
Brief Answer:
Follow up
Detailed Answer:
thanks for the additional information. It is certainly possible that one of the blood vessels became inflamed and contributed to the significant drop in hemoglobin.
He was very anemic when he arrived at the hospital and I'm glad he responded to transfusions.
If you continues to have progressive anemia he may need to see a surgeon to discuss possible surgical intervention for this type of thing.
Also his doctors will need to look at his medication regiment to make sure he's not on any medications which would contribute to further bleeding

Dr. Galamaga
