What Is The Cause And Treatment For Klebsiella Infection?
Question: Hi,
My 3 weeks old nephew just got diagnosed by Klebsiella. The doctors say the infection is in his intestines but it has spread to his blood as well. They put him on antibiotics. Can you please let me know if this is curable? How dangerous can this be? And what can this be caused by? What type of Klebsiella is this? What's the name?
Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
curable
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Klebsiella is usually in intestines, if there is a breach of intestinal immunity, which can happen in various illness like fever, vomiting, sepsis, etc., it comes to the blood causing septicemia.
It is definitely curable though if untreated can be dangerous enough to result in shock and hypotension .
Type of klebsiella will be known from blood culture report , usually it is Klebsiella pneumonia.
Antibiotics are definitely needed for atleast 10 days for infection removal.

Dr Arun

But isn't Klebsiella Pneumonia relate to lungs? His issue is in his intestines. What is Klebsiella Oxytoca?
I read on the web that infected patients might get meningitis or even get blinded or disabled. Is that true?
I also read that regardless if they're cured or not, they would get some sort of a malfunction for the rest of their lives. Is this true?
Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
many are curable
Detailed Answer:
1. Klebsiella pneumonia affects lungs, blood , brain, intestines. It is normally present in human intestines.
2. Oxytoca and rhinoscleromatis are two other species, which too are important nowadays as hospital acquired infections, they too can infect the areas like the first one.
3. Most patients can be cured if diagnosed early and treated appropriately with the right antibiotics based on culture sensitivity pattern.
4. Yes some patients do die and can leave morbidity in survivors. But hope for the best and I am sure your doctors would be handling it with great care .
