What Is The Cause And Treatment For Poor Appetite In An Infant?
Question: Hi doctor, I have 9 months old baby. She suddenly stopped drinking milk for about 2 weeks . I consulted doc. He suggested me cypon drops 0.5 ml daily three times. I used that about one month.when I stopped cypon she is not eating anything. Please suggest something . I came to know through this site that this is the side effect of cypon. Please tell me how to get rid of this and how to increase my babies appetite naturally

From you question it is not clear why baby stopped feeding suddenly. Cypon is not given for such condition. It is a drug which is usually used in chronically ill child with poor appetite to increase there weight. It acts through changes in various hormones level also.
Decreased appetite as a side effect of cypon is rare, it usually used as an appetite stimulant.
There are various side effects of many drugs, but it is not always there in each and every patient.Multiple studies have shown that cypon has not a very harmful effect. Few effects may be difficulty in urination,dry mouth,some abdominal disturbances, behavioral problems etc.You yourself can see that your baby may not has any of these.Even if there is any side effect it usually subsides when we withdraw the drug as it clears from the blood and its effects on various system weaned off. So don't worry much about the side effects.Try to find out the other causes of refusal to feed.
Is there any change in activity of baby?
Is he lethargic/irritable?
What I would suggest is to observe your child whether she is passing motion/urine or not, her behaviour and for any other symptoms which you find abnormal.
9 month old baby should take khichdi,halwa,dal ka pani, mashed potato etc. along with milk.So try to give her frequent small amount of all these and I hope she will start accepting well.
If you are getting anything abnormal consult your pediatrician.

My baby is preterm of 29 th week and 1.2kg birth weight.bottle feeding. She was in NICU about 40 days.from the beginning she used to take proper feeding about 10 days after that she stops for some days. In those days I need to force her for feeding.last two months her weight gain is less. At 8 th month she was 5.2. That's why my pediatrician suggested cypon.when I stopped again she is not eating properly . She used to pass motion in army green color and passes urination normally. Doctor please suggest some thing to feed her properly .and one more thing is there any special medication required for preterm babies for proper mental redevelopment . If so please suggest me.

Birth at gestational age of 29 week with weight of 1.2 kg and then at 8 months 5.2 kg, its too good. I appreciate the way of your care. I want to tell you that at 9 month of age weight of 5.2 kg is between 50th to 90th centile which is very normal. There are growth charts for preterm babies. According to that weight of 5.2 kg,length of 55 cm and head circumference of 38 cm is good. I think your baby needs to be observed over a period of time with proper growth charting.
Give him khichdi/suji ka halwa/dal ka panic/mashed boiled apple and potato. Add some sugar and oil to increase the calorie value.
Continue milk. Give frequent small feeds and don't feed forcefully.
Baby will need calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Even iron may be added if there is a need.
So, my suggestion

Follow the growth chart
Feed properly and give time for that
Supplements if needed
