Brief Answer:
Painful vaccines are whole cell vaccines

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Healthcare Magic.

The conventional painful pertussis vaccines (DTwP) contained cellular components of dead bacteria which was responsible for reactions and hence the pain.
The painless vaccines (DTaP) are acellular and hence are called painless as they cause less reaction, hence less pain.
In case of the painful vaccine i.e. DTwP vaccine where the w stands for whole cell, meaning it is made up of the entire cell of the deactivated organism , the Pertusis part of the vaccine has been associated with side effects such as pain, fever and irritability due to the presence of certain cellular components that cause reactions. But such reactions do not occur in case of the DTaP vaccine, the “a” stands for acellular, meaning it is made with the parts of the Pertusis bacteria, and hence the pain is quite less.

This vaccine is administered in combination with injectable polio vaccine and Hemophilus influenzae B vaccine.

Probably the child is unable to sleep properly due to the slight pain and discomfort of the vaccination. In case you feel that he might be in pain, you may give a dose or two of paracetamol (crocin) which is otherwise given for fever. You need not worry. It should subside in a day or so and things would be fine.

Hoping your family to be fit and fine

Regards
