Posted on Wed, 20 May 2015
Question: I was originally taking neurontin up to 1200 mg. Pain was still bad put me on tegretol up to 1000 mg. I couldn't tolerate it and I started cutting back to 400 mg. Tegretol side effects hair falling out nail splitting since I started taking on Feb. I. Today I stopped taking it and went back on neurontin 300 mg. How much should I take to be on the same dosage of tegretol. I have trigeminal neuralgia and have a brain tumor which is pushing on the nerve. I am having surgery on May 13th. My first dosage of neurontin was at 10 this morning 300 mg. and I felt funny after taking it and then it wore off. I need to take it soon because shocks are getting bad. My doctor is out of the country and I am having problems having anyone getting back to me. Is there any other type of drugs which can be taken to treat nerve pain?

Brief Answer:
You can use pregabalin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

since neurontin was not effective enough for your pain, I don't see the reason to continue with it. If you could not tolerate tegretol then perhaps you should try some alternatives.

I would suggest pregabalin starting with a low dose like 50mg twice per day and titrating upwards until the pain is under better control or serious side effects occur. The usual target is 150mg twice per day (300mg total). In renal failure dose modification is recommended.

Kind Regards!
