Question: I am taking 4 mgs of Crestor for several years. Over the past 3 weeks I've been experiencing muscle pain ad remembered that about 15 years ago I was taking Lipitor and experiencing the same symptoms. The Dr chaned me to Zocor and the pain abated.

The dosage of Crestor should be 40 mgs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I understand your concern and would like to explain that you are right in presenting your personal experience with these lipid lowering medications.

All the three drugs (Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor) you mentioned above belong to hypolipemiant therapy (statins).

But as Crestor exerts myalgia (muscle pain) at an average rate of 3-13%, Lipitor has shown a complication rate of myalgia as an adverse effect at around 3-8% and Zocor to a lesser degree of 5%.

So, it seems that as almost all statins exert potential adverse effects like myalgia, Zocor appears with a safer profile in this regard.

Coming to this point, I recommend performing some lab tests for investigating any adverse implication of Crestor in a possible myopathy and/or liver injury:

- AST & ALT,
- CPK,
- LDH,
- bilirubin,
- PCR

In case of important increase of transaminases (AST & ALT), CPK and other tests as well, it is recommended to stop Crestor for at least a couple of weeks and discuss after that the oportunity of switching to another safer statin like Zocor.

It has been noted that when a statin is restarted after a period of withdrawal, certain adverse effects like muscle pain, etc. appear to a lower degree.

You need to discuss with your prescribing doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope you will find this answer helpful.

In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
