Question: Hi Sir,
I am XXXX, ma father suffered with polycystic kidney disease and died at the age of 50.
I am not sure at what age pkd started for him. Now my age is 33 entering into 34 next month.
Last weeke USG and blood reports shows everything normal. No cysts so far. So now what are the chances of getting pkd in future and what is life expectancy if starts at the age of 34.
Is usg is enough to detect or mri is required?

Also my cousins affected with same disease and for them they got diagonised it at the age of 29-30.
And mostly in our family younger children are getting this disease in our fathers generation and inour generation also. But not just younger there are few elder cases also. Is there anyhting like it is common for young children in a family?

Brief Answer:
PKD id Hereditary in nature

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Polycystic disease of the kidney (PKD) is a genetic disorder and usually starts at the age of 30-40 years of age .However in 10% of cases it may start at younger age .

There is 50% chance of getting PKD with one of the parents having it ,

As regards the life expectancy it depends upon whether it involves only one kidney or both the kidneys and other factors like number of cysts ,size of the cysts and extent of damage to the affected kidneys.

Ultrasound scan is reliable investigation to detect PKD .MRI is advised in a situation when very small cysts are detected on ultrasound scanning .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.
