What Is The Prognosis Of Esophageal Cancer With Brain Metastases?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2017
Question: My husband has espnogeal cancer that metastasis to the brain. That surgery was successful. They are saying that because it traveled to the brain it is extremely rare and there is no data on treatment. They will be starting with very aggressive chemo an radiation for 8 weeks then do another PETscan to see what course of action to take next. The first PET shows no cancer anywhere else and he has no symptoms. Your opinions on this, CBD shots, and nutrition thru this trying time. My husband is 71 and in very good health otherwise.

Brief Answer:
Yes this is a rare situation

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Esophageal cancer spreading to the brain while other parts of the body are free is a very rare situation. As the surgery has been done, we should have enough tissue to distinguish it from a new brain tumor.

Once we have ruled out that this is not a new brain tumor and indeed spread of esophageal cancer, we should treat it with radiation to the brain followed by chemotherapy. Which chemotherapy to use will be difficult to decide. Most probably platinum based.

Nutrition is a very important part of supportive care. I am sure his dietitian will formulate a good diet plan. We do not recommend routine supplements or CBD shots. There is no data that these help. A good balanced diet matters.

Hope he will have a good response to treatment with good quality of life.

Regards
