Posted on Mon, 17 Apr 2017
Question: Mom did a knee replacement 6 Feb 2017 after surgery physio tore a ligament in the knee. Also the wound does not want to heal because the tissue is non viable and this is the second time the wound got infected and needed to be surgically cleaned. Doc says he cannot do anything but keep cleaning it and hope for the wound to heal and a few months from now do an operation to fix the ligament. Doesn't make sense please help.

Brief Answer:
Pus culture, VAC, Skin graft, Flap

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

Usually non healing wounds can be best treated by a plastic surgeon by his expertise in VAC or Vaccuum Assisted Closure and skin graft or flaps.

The infection needs to be treated after getting a report on the kind of bacteria that is causing the infection. This can be obtained by taking a swab of the pus and submitting it for culture and antibiotic sensitivity analysis.

In some instances surgical opening of the wound and cleaning may be required.

It would help if you could consult the Plastic surgeon in the hospital for his opinion and also discuss about wound culture and sensitivity with your Doctor.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
