Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 58 yrs. old and suffered a whiplash injury and herniated disc of C5-C6 in 1998. Have had numerous PT s and latest MRI shows herniated disc receded but have fibromyalgia, arthritis and spinal stenosis. 5 months ago, I had rt knee replacement and go 2/3 times a week for pool therapy. My neck is starting to stiffen and bother me again. Bought a new tempurpedic pillow, specifically for head and neck. Need 2 pillows to sleep on...any suggestions to alleviate neck pain? I cannot take any pain meds, NSAIDS as allergic to most (have tried them all) and surgery is out of the question. I use tylenol and heat/ice to help. Any more suggestions?
You are suffering from neck pain. You cannot take pain medications due to allergy. You have history of spinal stenosis, arthritis and fibromyalgia. To get relieve from neck pain get connected to a Physical therapist, do neck strengthening exercises regularly. Always maintain correct posture while sleeping, sitting or walking. Neck pain can also be relieved by massage therapy, electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Sometimes, immobilization for a short time and traction are very effective.
The discs between the vertebrae in the spine require water to maintain spinal alignment, stay well hydrated. Add two cups of Epsom salt to a warm bath and soak in the tub it will help your muscles relax & relieve neck pain. Avoid using a high pillow it will stiffen the neck, use a soft foam pillow that takes the contour of your head and helps your spine stay comfortable. Stay away from addictions if any, maintain healthy weight and stay active, avoid stress.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
