While Taking Blood For Test Wrist Started Tingling And Burning. Still Have Discomfort. Suggest?
Question: Yes, my husband had some blood drawn for routine tests on Saturday. During the draw, his wrist started tingling and burning. The lady removed the needle and finished the draw on the other arm. He is still having discomfort, sometimes better than other. In that wrist particularly when he straightens his arm. Is this likely nerve damage, and does he need medical attention or will it likely improve on its own?
Hi and welcome to XXXXXXX
Thank you for your query.
This is common complication and can be unpleasant but this is nothing to worry about. It usually isn't direct damage of nerve by needle, more common there is subcutaneous hematoma or swelling which presses nerve. So he might have these symptoms till this hematoma or swelling pulls back (3-5 days). But it will subside in next 24 hours already.
He should see doctor if he experiences loss of sensation, loss of pulsation in radial artery, arm swelling or inability to move fingers.
If not, then he should just rest with his hand and not to use keyboard or other frequent activities with fingers.
Wish you good health.
