Brief Answer: help some persons, ineffective in others Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for use healthcare magic There are a number of different antiemetics but they have different strengths. Some are more likely to work than others. In addition persons have different responses to medication, while it may be effective in one person, it would have no effect in another. It is also important to remember that they can only dampen the urge to vomit and in most cases cannot eliminate it completely. Antiemetics belong to different families of drugs and work along different pathways to help to reduce vomiting. There are at least 7 to 8 different classes of drugs. In some persons the over the counter anti emetics such as dramamine, benadry (can also be used as an antiemetic), cyclizine are not effective. There are other antiemetics such as zofran, anzemet, zyprexa, sancuso that are stronger but require a prescription and are quite commonly used to help patients such chemo patients with their nausea though zofran has been used effectively in gastroenteritis. Summary- the effectiveness varies from one person to the next, may need to combine different types of drugs or use herbal methods (ginger or peppermint) along with traditional medication for added benefit. i hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

So what is the strongest?

Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (31 minutes later)
Brief Answer: different types Detailed Answer: Hi The medications mentioned are only a few of the wide range of anti emetics available. The stronger ones include some of those mentioned (zofran, sancuso, anzemet). Others are prochlorperazine, aprepiant, olanzapine, some forms of steroids and benzodiapines (lorazepam). These drugs have other uses but have been found to also help with nausea. They are usually used, however, for nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. Zofran has been studied in children with gastroenteritis and shown to be effective. In addition to the use of medication for vomiting, you would want to avoid large meals/amts of liquids, strong odours (it would be best not to be involved in the preparation of meals - can cause vomiting), spicy or fatty meals. There are different causes of nausea and vomiting. The treatment may vary slightly according to the cause. Please feel free to ask anything else

Brief Answer: may need assessment Detailed Answer: HI Nausea can be acute (short term) or chronic (prolonged).I think it is one of the worse sensations a person can feel. The main causes of acute nausea would be: (1) side effect of medication (2) pregnancy (3)acute gastroenteritis (4)infections (5)headaches- specifically migraines (6)associated with vertigo and dizziness (7)brain injury Prolonged nausea can result from: (1) mass in the brain (2)any mass in the abdomen or pelvis (3)side effect of medication (4)obstruction of the bowel (blockage of bowel) (5)anxiety (6)high levels of the electrolyte calcium (7)exposure to toxins To determine the exact cause, if it is persistent, you may need to consider visiting visiting your doctor for an assessment. This would involve examination of the abdomen, ears (assist in balance and problems with inner ear cause nausea) a central nervous system examination (brain and other nerve tests). Bloods would be need to check electrolytes, liver and kidney . A full blood count would check for infection Your doctor would also be able to give medication that would be more effective than what is available over the counter
