Why Is A Neurosonogram Advised During 6th Month Of Pregnancy?
I would like to know whether any risks are associated with this test? Also, whether ethnicity/ family history can be a reason and what are the possible complications associated with increased head circumference/ macrocephaly?
Neuroscan required to rule out Hydrocephalus
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Mr XXXX
The normal Head circumference at birth is around 34 cm. It increases by 2cm per month for 1st 3 months that is around 40 cms by end of 3 months. After that it increases by 0.5 cm per month for rest of 1 year. So by end of 6 months it should be around 41.5cm to 42cm. These values are just average, there could be wide variation. As the head circumference is 45cm which is on higher side it is important to rule out Hydrocephalus as the cause.
Hydrocephalus is excessive accumulation of Cerebrospinal fluid around brain. This can be ruled by Ultrasound of skull done through anterior fontanelle also known as Neurosonogram. The findings could be normal too and the head circumference could be normal variation. It is not related to any family history or ethnicity.
Do get a routine Ultrasound and get back to me with reports.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mr XXXX
The scan report is very reassuring. Apart from the reports mentioned even Vetriculo hemisphere ratio is normal ,ruling out with certainity any intracranial lesion or hydrocephalus. So there is no reason to be worried about the slightly higher head circumference.
Apologies for late reply as was busy in operation theater.
Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.
Do write to me directly for any concern anytime.
Take care
