Will ALT And AST Levels Decrease After Quitting Drinking?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Apr 2015
Question: Will Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) levels decrease significantly after a person stops consuming alcohol? If so, what is the typical rate/ length of time for reduction? Aside from stopping consuming alcohol, are there herbs or other ways to improve the ALT and AST levels? Thank you for your consideration.

Brief Answer:
Yes it will reduce significantly.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greeting from Dr. Divakara.P
First of all thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic for posting your query.

See there are many causes for elevated ALT, AST levels. Common causes are Infections, Medications , Alcohol , etc.

If Alcohol was the only cause for elevated AST, ALT then yes there will be significant reduction in the levels once alcohol intake is stopped.

There is no typical rate of reduction but in general there will be 50% reduction in 10-14 days and 80-90% reduction in 2 months.

There are medications like Hepamerz or Silymarin which shall help in improving AST and ALT levels. Ask your doctor for the prescription.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards

Aside from medications such as Hepamerz or Silymarin, are you aware of any herbs that will expedite the reduction in the AST level from 106 and ALT level from 140?

Aside from counseling programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, do you have any suggestions on medications, herbs, approaches, etc., that may be successful in curbing the desire to consume alcohol?

The information you provided has been very helpful and I appreciate the benefit of your training and wisdom. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Use Liv 52

Detailed Answer:
HI

For curbing the desire for alcohol before starting any kind of medications first a counseling is a must . Else you may not continue to take those medicines.

As of herbs is concerned do you need herbs only or a herbal medication will do . A herbal medication called Liv 52 will help in improving your liver enzyme levels . But if you insists for herbs only try to get " The Caper Bush " .

As of herbs for curbing the desire -- There are no approved herbal medications for that. I would recommend going for allopathic medicine only. Some herbs used are Dandelion, Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) ,Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) but their efficacy is not guaranteed.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.
