Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.
The pain you are referring could be the 'ovulation pain' and the spotting 'ovulation spotting'. It occurs 14 days before menstruation. It may be pinching pain or sometimes felt as cramps. As you say, it is felt just above the hip bone.
During menstrual cycle, ovary releases the egg. This egg ruptures through the ovarian follicle which causes pain. Sometimes, there may be mild spotting. If you have bloating sensation, increased cervical mucus secretion followed by the pain you have experienced, then it indicates ovulation pain.
Since the pain was on the right side it could also be due to appendicitis or endometriosis but in both these conditions spotting is rare. You should visit your treating Dr if pain is reccurent and becomes more frequent before the next period to rule out other possibilities like appendicitis.
