Hi,I am Dr. Carol Rogala (Emergency Medicine). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a friend who was 19 or 20 and she recently died in her sleep from a blood clot that was too close to her heart. This now has me worried as to what caused it because i don't know what causes blood clots. She was overweight, but i don't know if that would have to do with it. Now that has me worried because of course i don't want that happening to me or anyone else i know so can anyone tell me what causes a blood clot like that this young, and how can you prevent that. She basically had a heart attack from what i was told.
Without more information about your friend's medical history---and that of her family---it is impossible to determine what really happened to her. While it is possible that a clot formed and caused a heart attack, the full explanation is much more complicated that that. She may have had any number of various medical disorders that contributed to what happened, and all of these disorders are extremely rare. These include congenital heart disease, congenital rhythm disorders, inherited clotting disorders, and a multitude of other very rare disorders. Because of the relative rarity of these disorders, it is highly unlikely that a similar thing would happen to you or anyone else that you know.
I am sorry for your loss.
