What Causes Chest Pain And Breathlessness In A 19 Year Old Girl?

My daughter is 19 and will be turning 20 in August. She has been having chest pains for the last 5 days but 6 today. She wakes up 3 times at night from feeling like she can t breath and gets chest pains, when she wakes up she feels like she can breath again. The chest pains come and goes in the day time as well and she said the chest pains last for about 20 minutes. She said they probably come every hour. She said she only gets the pains when she feels like she can t breath properly. She went to the doctors yesterday. The doctors thought it could be a blood clot in the lungs. Listened to her breathing and gave her a heart scan he said the heart scan was normal but sent her to the hospital in an ambulance. At the hospital the gave her a blood test for everything, chest X-ray, and heat scan again, they said everything came back normal and checked temp which was 37. Put her on a drop in case they needed more blood. And gave her a panadeine at 12pm went and had lunch after eating the pains came back and she felt like she couldn t breath again so I went and brought her more panadeine and she said it all went away again. Pains and felt like she couldn t breath again came back at 10:30pm last night she took more panadeine and slept through last night without waking up with pains. Woke up this morning at 7 and had pains again and felt like she couldn t breath. Just want to know what else this come be if it s not a blood clot? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The blood tests, chest X-ray, scans should show up any physical reason for the shortness of breath, if present.

If the tests do not show a physical or structural cause then it is possible that the chest pain and shortness of breath are related to a non-physical cause such as anxiety.

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons for chest pain and shortness of breath. It can also cause palpitations in some persons as well. You may want to consider assessing for this condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
