4 Year Old Feeling Tired, Blood In Stool.Concerned

My son is almost 4. Very healthy, but for the last week he has slept a lot and is very tired acting. Today I noticed blood in his stool, only a small amount. He did have a bm yesterday and so I do not believe he is constipated. Our insurance is very bad, so wondering if I can wait a couple of days and see how he is. I thought he was tired because he might be growing but now with the blood I am concerned.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

If the blood was only on one side of the stool and your son's bottom hurts then he may be having anal fissure which need to be examined and attended to. The best management is to ensure that your son does not pass very hard stool and his diet contains adequate amount of roughage.

If the blood was well mixed with stool then an internal examination will be required to rule out the source of bleeding. He may even require an endoscopy if the lower portion does not reveal the source of bleeding.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your son an early recovery.
