Hi
Thanks for your query,
Constipation in children is mostly related to dietary intake.
Hypothyroidism needs to be ruled out.
I suggest you to give him plenty of fluids.
Give fiber rich diet like green leafy vegetables, fruit, legumes,
Decrease quantity of milk and milk products.
Give honey with warm water first thing in morning.

If it persist get him evaluated by pediatrician as he may need laxative for some time.

Wishing your child good health.
God bless..

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

She is having constipation with partial retention of stools.

If there is fecal impaction at present, it has to be evacuated by keeping a suppository with the advise of a doctor.

It is looking like functional constipation which is common in some children.

I advise you the following for relief:

1.Give plenty of oral fluids and water

2.Encourage her to sit it in toilet daily for 5 to 10 minutes

3.Give dietary fiber rich diet such as vegetables, fruits, and green leafy vegetables

4.You can give orally given stool softeners like lactulose in prescribed dose to make stool soft during the time of constipation for 3 to 5 days.

Screening ultrasound abdomen and pelvis and thyroid function tests should be done routinely to rule out any associated problem.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
