5 Week Old Child, Diagnosed With Vacterl Syndrome. Association Between Hearing Loss And Vacterl Diagnosis?
My daughter is a 5 week old female who has been diagnosed with VACTERL syndrome. She had a posterior sagittal anorectoplasty to repair an imperforate anus at 2 weeks of age. She had a anovaginal fistula. Surgery was successful. She also has a tethered cord and malformed Sacral vertebrae. In addtion, she has a semi-horsehoe kidney that is enlarged and sits anterior to the retroperitoneal area.... her enlarged kidney has with dual ureters however no reflux was seen via VCUG testing. Genetics team suggested only a hearing screen for follow up at week 2.... the screening went well and she passed in both ears (Mass General, Boston MA in association with Mass Eye and Ear.) Pediatrician in association with MGH has requested a subsequent hearing screen.... My question is, Is Hearing loss associated in a higher percentage with VACTERL diagnosis? (She has no ear/cochlear malformations) Thank you!
Hi, No it is not! However hearing test at 2 weeks shod be followed by another one later. Whenever there are congenital anomalies, this is requested as apart of routine work up. Good luck Dr uma
