63 Years. History Of Surgical Menopause. On Premarin. Trying To Get Off Medication. Help

I have been on Premarin since 1992, .625mg for many years, recently down to .3 dosage. I am 63 years old, and had surgical menopause in 1992. I have tried a couple of time to get off Premarin, but with no success. My health is good, regular mammograms, DEXA scans are good. Should I still not be on this? I take about 3 pills a week.

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Normally this question should have been redirected to your treating doctor as he/she would have normally been monitoring you to decide when to take you off this. Premarin is used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to relief the symptoms of menopause and given that you had been taking this since 1992 might be proper for you to start thinking of being taken off the medication. Even though it has an advantage as 2nd line option for prevention of osteoporosis.
Now to withdraw from premarin requires your doctor to decide on which proper method to you. This may include tapering the dose from 3 tabs week to 1 per week until you can finally stop. Normally at your age, you should be able to tolerate absence of estrogen from your system better than before.
Do discuss with your gynobs how ever if you really consider stopping the pill.
