7 Month Son, Swelling On Back Of Ear, Smelling, Paining While Touching. Taking Paracetamol. Recommendations?
Dear Dr.
My son (7+months old) got reddish swelling back to the ear with distinguish smell from ear, felt unconfortable and started weeping after touching particular ear.2 Days back, my paediatrics doc saw son's ear and only prescribed paracetamol after looking inside the ear and said there is no infection since ear is clean. But tonight he started weeping non-stop until administrated the paracetamol and suddenly, I found blood clot inside the ear. Sir, what would be probable solution for this.Plz plz help
Hi ! The little one must have got a ear infection which at times is be associated with a respiratory tract infection. Due to fluid accumulation in the ear, the tympanic membrane (ear drum) becomes tense which causes pain to the patient. The reddish looking swelling in the back of the ear was due to spreading infection of the surrounding tissue may be along with a lymph node swelling. Now due unrelieved pressure in the ear, the ear drum must have given way (perforated) discharging blood and inflammatory fluid in the external ear which you saw. In this age group, this is a common infection missed frequently specially because the baby can not speak where the pain is. I would suggest you to get the baby reviewed by your pediatrician/ENT specialist, who may prescribe some antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs for him. I wish your son an early recovery.
