72 Years. History Of Being On Warfarin, Medication For Heart. Effects Of Sudden Stopping Of Medications?
Hi there, my father is 72 and was on warfrin for just over 1 year now plus other medications for his heart. Just 2 weeks ago I noticed he stopped taking all of them. The doctors are very concerned that if he don't start taking them again his blood will thicken, clot and he will stroke out. How long does it take for something like this to happen? I'm so scared that something is going to happen.
There are different indications for the use of anti coagulants such as warfarin. It is used for persons with heart valves, history of atrial fibrillation, history of clots, in some persons after a heart attack.
The risk of a stroke would depend on the indication for the medication and the control of other risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking.
You should speak to your father to find out why he stopped them and to discuss restarting them.
I hope this helps
