79 Years. Swelling And Pain In Feet And Ankles When Sitting For Long Time. History Of Ventricular Bleed. On Methimazole, Metoprolol Etc. Will Amlodipine Cause Swelling?

I sit for one or two hours in the early morning at my computer at home transcribing medical records. Mostly in the summer my feet and ankles swell and my feet are very painful. I am 79 years in age. I had a ventricular bleed 7 years ago with ventriculostmies and a pacemaker placed 4-1/2 years ago because of sinus pause. I take methimazole for hyperthyroidism and Metoprolol, lisinopril and amlodipine. I consider myself to be healthy and am very active -- except when I'm sitting at the computer and this foot swelling happens. I read on the internet that Amlodipine may cause swelling. I really don't want to take any more medications. Would walking a structured every day walk help me out? I appreciate that you are also up at 4 a.m. as that's the time right now. Thank you.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Based on your description of symptoms, I personally feel that the swellings of ankle & foot are more PHYSIOLOGICAL than due to drugs.
This is because at your age the valves in the veins become incompetent and the venous blood will pool up in the dependent parts due the effect of gravity. And once you keep your legs elevated, the odema comes down immediately.

I suggest you to wear stockinnette ( elastic compression stockings ) while sitting for prolonged periods which will work effectively in preventing the swellings of ankle & foot.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Rheumatologist Dr. Jasneet Singh's  Response
Hello
The reason for swelling in your ankles can be due amlodipine, which causes what is known as ankle edema. Considering your age and being a cardiac patient you need to evaluate your cardiac and kidney status as well.
