8 Weeks Pregnant. No Cardiac Activity In Ultrasound. No Bleeding. Should I Take A Second Ultrasound?
Hi doctor, I got my ultrasound done today. I am about 8 weeks pregnant. My last LMP was 7/5/2013. The ultrasound has not detected any cardiac activity. This was the first ultrasound I go for today. There was no free fluid as written by doctor and poor decidual reaction. She told me a missed abortion. I do not have any bleeding or any discomfort. Should I go for a second ultrasound somewhere else?

Usually, fetal cardiac activity is seen around 7-8 weeks through abdominal USG. With TVS scan, it is obtained around 6-7 weeks.
Sometimes, in late pregnancy, it can be obtained around 8-9 weeks. So you can undergo one TVS scan after 1 wk for detailed picture. Otherwise, it may turn into missed miscarriage.
Kindly, consult with your gynecologist for next line management after the scan report. Good luck.
Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.
While you imply that you are 8 weeks along, your LMP implies that you are much earlier. Also, if you are actually 8 weeks along, and they do not see anything in the uterus, then the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy exists. You need a quantitative HCG level drawn as soon as possible to sort this out!
I hope that this helps and good luck!

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.
Normally by around 8 weeks of pregnancy cardiac activity will be detected. You can get one more ultrasound for confirmation and location of sac. Get blood HCG test done, If its a missed abortion you need to get consult your doctor for complete removal of products of conception.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries. Wish you good health. Take care.
In early pregnancyultrasound, apart from fetal cardiac activity, it is also important to record gestational sac age, presence of yolk sac and fetal pole. If possible fetal crown rump length is also measured.
Cardiac activity is a confirmatory sign for fetal development and always looked for between 7 to 9 weeks by abdominal scan.
If CRL, fetal pole and gestation sac are also suspiciously in favor for a non viable pregnancy, then repeat ultrasound scan is required.
hi, fetal cardiac actvity is an important finding it can not be missed, so it must be surely missed abortion. however for your satisfaction, repeat USG can be done.
