95 Year Old With A Painful Lump In Sternum After Straining. Is Ibuprofen Enough?
My mother is 95 and a young 95 - two weeks ago our granddaughter have her a big hug and lifted her off the ground - it hurt her chest -- after about 2 weeks and some work with spreading some mulch at her house she is now having severe pain and a lump has developed on her sternum... should we bind her or will a steady dose of ibuprofen be enough???? she is very active for her 95 years.
95 years old person has for sure much weaker bones and muscles than young person. This makes such person more prone to any trauma. At her age, even a hug and lifting can cause bones fractures.
Pain and lump on her sternum can be caused by sternum fracture. It is possible even if symptoms does not point it. Lump appears due to bone healing. Such healing lasts about 4 weeks. During that time, the pain can be present. As this is an old person, I suggest you to take your mom to the doctor. With sternum or ribs fracture there is always a risk of pneumothorax (air between the lung and the chest). Pneumothorax can be in some cases life threatening. That is why chest X-ray, ribs X-ray and sternum X-ray should be done. Ibuprofen is fine as long as it helps. If not, some other pain killers might be more effective (like Diclophenac)
Hope this will help. Regards.
