A Case Of Lifelong Alcoholic. Eat Very Poorly. Now Vomited All Night. Have Swollen Face, Jaw, Tongue. Suggestions?

Hello,

My father has been a lifelong alcoholic to the point he drinks nearly a case of beer daily, add half a fifth of whiskey, and MIGHT eat a piece of toast or a bowl of cereal during the day. Day before yesterday he drank this much, did not eat, vomited all night long, fell down repeatedly, cut himself.....just a bad deal. Yesterday, he tried to eat, vomited it up, and drank as much alcohol again. Again, he was up all night vomiting. This moring his face is extremely swollen, his jaw is abnormally swollen & his tongue swelling too. Mother is taking him to the emergency room. Aside from being a hardcore alcoholic, what is causing the swelling?

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I understand that you are worried and distressed about your father's health condition. Regarding the swelling of the face and jaw, one possibility could be an accidental injury to the face (probably a fracture of the facial bones / jaw) which is causing the inflammation (you have mentioned that he had fallen down repeatedly the previous night). Another possibility could be an allergic reaction which is causing the sudden, severe swelling.

A clear cause can be established only after performing a detailed physical examination and if necessary, relevant investigations. So I suggest that you follow-up with the ER doctors regarding the cause of his swelling.

I would also sugest that you use this opportunity to seek professional help for your father's alcohol addiction since his drinking is dangerously high and this seems to be the root cause for his problems.

Wish you all the best.
