Abdominal Pain, Below Sternum, Severe Pain, Loss Of Appetite, No Vomiting, No Diarrhea. Meaning?
My 15 year old daughter started having sharp pains in her upper abdomen (just below her sternum) in the middle of the night. The pain is not so severe as to keep her from functioning, she just mentions the pain. The pain seems to subside if she hunches over, but hurts if she sits up, or stands up straight, or takes a deep breath. She hasn't lost her appetite, no fever, no vomiting, no diarrhea, no constipation...she doesn't have any other symptoms besides the pain. Any thoughts?

The pain may be felt in the abdomen, but not FROM he abdomen! / it could have been referred pain - spasm of chest wall muscle, as suggested by its relation to movements...Try paracetamol and muscle relaxant - hopefully all will be well..
[Stomach pain is related to food, has altered bowel habits, colicky or burning and so on...]

Hi ! Usually pain abdomen in the middle of the night is pain in empty stomach, which points towards hyperacidity causing possible ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, which are parts of the intestinal tract. But the position of her getting relief of the pain and getting it again may point towards mild inflammation of pancreas. Consult your family physician who may advise you for few routine blood tests iincluding serum Amylase and serum Lipase apart from an ultrasound of abdomen. Take care.

I would like to say that there are two possible reasons of pain abdomen in your's daughter case.
Anxiety ( Competition of & in study).
Hyper acidity i.e. gastritis.
3rd possible reason may be over feeding by herself and by parents due to affection to their child.
In my opinion pl take it very easy and be relax
. Let the child live normal life.
