About A Week Ago My 12 Year Old Son Was

About a week ago my 12 year old son was seeing a dark shadow in the corner of his eye. It did not flutter or move around. It was in his peripheral vision. If he looked straight ahead in low light, he would see it. If he tried to turn his eyes to "see it" it would disappear. A few days later he reported the area was getting smaller, but that he now would see colors like pink or blue flash and then go away. We took him to our opthamologist right away who reported his eye looked healthy and that it perhaps was something neurological. But he wants us to return for a follow up in 2 weeks. The last day or two my son has reported the shadow and colors are gone. He suffered no head injury and is not taking any mediciations. My question is, can a child experience these symptoms for no serious reason at all? It is confusing to me to think of how/why he experienced these problems and now they are gone. I hope there is nothing to worry about, but I can't justify it in my head.
