Abscess Drained In Mouth, Cheek Swelling, Pain. Normal Symptoms?
I had an abscess drained in my mouth about 3 days ago. they made an incision into my gum to drain it. It is still causing me pain and my cheek is still swollen. However the swollen area has gotten rather hard. Is this something i should be concerned about or is this a normal after effect of having an abscess drained the way i did?

i am glad you posted your query, first of all, i would like to inform you that as the abscess has been drained by your dentist therefore you need not worry, as most of the infection(pus) must have discharged by now, but as a normal defense mechanism of our body, fibrosis starts in order to repair the damaged tissue, which gives a firm consistency to the affected area.
i hope you are on antibiotics till the time swelling completely subsides, but if not, start with a 7-10 days antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication.
also, try warm saline rinses(3-4 times/day),
use an antibacterial(betadine) mouth wash (2 times/day)to hasten the healing process.
do not worry, the swelling will subside.
remember to have regular follow ups with your dentist until swelling goes off completely,

hi..abscess usually drains after making incision in that area.check also for whether the associated tooth is decayed or periodontally compromised.if tooth is decayed go for root canal treatment or if periodontally effected,scaling and rootplanning has to be done.please avoid antibiotics untill the abscess drains completely.orelse it can lead into antibioma;the swelling becomes hard..hope you get well soon.

fast relief to any pus swollen area is incision and drainage, which is being done already.
antibiotic course is mandatory in abcess cases.
visit the dentist to ask that, if the condition permit for the healing pack on the gums.
