Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Spasmoproxyvan is a combination of Paracetamol (Acetaminophen), Propoxyphene and Dicyclomine. It is used for colicky pain like pain associated with periods and diarrhea.

Propoxyphene is an opioid drug as so results in dependence and addiction. Although it belongs to opioid group it is a mild analgesic and is similar in its efficacy only to Paracetamol and not to Morphine. But when combined with Paracetamol, the degree of analgesic action is more.

Propoxyphene and its metabolites (break down products) accumulate in the body resulting in severe side effects like respiratory depression (suppression of breathing) and repeated doses along with Paracetamol can cause liver problems. Hence it should not be taken continuously. Also, it results in tolerance. Tolerance means you need more drug for producing the same response and this will result in over dose of the drug.

Though Naloxone can reverse the over dose of Propoxyphene, no specific drug is available for its de addiction. Withdrawal symptoms produced by Propoxyphene is minimal and so you need not worry about stopping it. What you have is only a psychological dependence and not physical dependence. You should stop the drug gradua;ly. You can take analgesics like Diclofenac as a substitute to Spasmoproxyvon.

I hope this helps.
