Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi Mandira,
You have done the right thing by taking a decision to act on the situation your brother is going through.
Regular use of tobacco and alcohol, excessive use or inability to abstain or discontinue the substance is most likely a dependence syndrome as you rightly called as addiction.
A person who has a long term alcohol dependence syndrome is prone to having depressive disorder commonly or other mental illnesses. Additionally, a break in the marriage is a significant life event that can precipitate a mental illness in a vulnerable person.
The symptoms you describe of being sad, irritable, smiling to self and significant increase in the intake of tobacco are symptoms of a mental illness. An accurate diagnosis will require a more detailed history and examination of the patient by a qualified psychiatrist. The ideal thing to do right now would be to take him to a psychiatrist for management.

Hope this helps,
Dr Anjana Rao
