Admitted For Fever And Vomiting, Thyroid Suspected. On Syline But Still Vomit Is Not Stopping. Why Is The Vomit Black?

Hi, My nephew is 8 yrs old. he is admitted in the hospital for high fever and continous vomitting. The doctor has put him 3 syline since but yet his vomitting is not stopping. recently he has vommited black in colour. his WBC count has become low. Doctor suspect him Typhoid. Why is he vommiting Black? His stool also smells foul?

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Low WBC count is associated with viral fever and also is seen in Typhoid fever.

Vomitings may be due to associated gastritis which is commonly seen in viral fevers and gut infections.

Because of vomitinds there may be a tear in the lower end of esophagus which causes bleeding into stomach and this blood turns into coffee ground color because of the action of gastric acid present in the stomach.

Or some times erosive gastritis leads to bleeding into stomach.

Black to brown color vomiting is suggestive of some amount of bleeding into stomach.

It can be managed by keeping the child nil by mouth, on IV proton pump inhibitor, IV anti emetic, and IV fluids.

Infection to be treated accordingly with antibiotics if required.

Discuss your concerns with the treating doctor.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

A vomit is black in color if it has blood in it. Altered blood appears black in color.

Further investigations and physical examination are required to confirm the diagnosis.

What about the other investigations? Was a Widal done? What is the blood culture report.

what about the appetite
is there body aches and pain
vomiting can be due to electrolyte imbalances and also due to
toxins
get her serum electrolytes, renal function tests ALT, and blood culture and review me back
