Advised Lupron For Severe Endometriosis. Considering The Tablet's Side Effects, Is Hysterectomy A Better Option?
I was just diagnosed with severe endometriosis and my doctor wants to put me on Lupron. The side effects seem scary to me and I feel I would probably get the side effects since I always get side effects of every drug I've ever been on. I'm 41 and don't plan on having anymore children. Would a hysterectomy be a better option then medication? I haven't met with my dr. yet, but wanted another opinion.
Hello Thanks for your query. First and foremost - hysterectomy is NOT the answer to endometriosis ! Endometriosis indicates the presence of active endometrial tissue OUTSIDE the uterine cavity. Lupron is fraught with side effects, but then endometriosis is a hormone dependent condition. Lupron would temporarily suspend the hormonal activity, and you are not far from peri menopause. Having a hysterectomy would not guarantee pain relief, lupron would work to a great extent short term. Why not try taking the drug for a short period and give yourself a chance. Surgery itself is not devoid of risks, and pain often does persist even after hysterectomy in severe endometriosis. Take care.
