Anterograde Amnesia After Endoscopy To Cauterize Barrett's Cells, Dizziness And Strange Feeling. Help

My father, 68-year-old male with Barrett's esophagus, just underwent his 9th endoscopy to evaluate and cauterize Barrett's cells ... He is experiencing anterograde amnesia still, 5 days after the procedure - not a total short-term memory loss, but several events throughout the week he has no recollection of, and he's had bouts of dizziness and "feeling strange" he says. He was given conscious sedation (not sure which drug), and has never experienced the memory loss to this extent.

Hello

Welcome to HCM

Reviewed your history. Endoscopic procedures are usually carried out under mild sedation to decrease anxiety and discomfort. Anterograde amnesia can rarely occur with some anaesthetic agents but it is rarely severe. Usually it is limited to period immediately prior, during and post procedure and longterm effects are unusual. Hence in your father case other conditions leading to memory disturbances also need to be considered apart from sedation. Other coexisting diseases responsible for memory disturbance also needs evaluation.

Hence it advisable to consult a neuro physician, as they would completely evaluated him with examination and some relevant investigation.

I hope u find this info helpful.

Wish u good health.
