Hi there for the passed couple of weeks I've had pain and cramps in my lower abdominal area, which has also presented as swollen, bloated and at times hard - I hadn't had a bowel motion for about a week (which is fairly normal for me) - I took laxatives over a couple of days which helped, however I've also notice In the morning before I get up there is an uncomfortable feeling like heart burn then once up the discomfort start in lower abdominal. Over the weekend I've noticed my face/eyes seems swollen/puffy . I feel sluggish - can you help please?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

The symptoms are apparently due to an obstruction in the colon (either a growth, polyps or impacted stools. You should undergo a colonoscopy at the earliest, to visualize the inside of the colon for the exact cause. The treatment will depend on the cause.

Other possibility is that of infected fluid in the peritoneum, causing ileus (paralysis of the colon), which can account for puffiness over face.

In the meanwhile, take plenty of water, high fiber diet, Psyllium husk/powder and 2-3 days' course of a strong purgative, such as, Liquid Paraffin or Lactulose to clear the obstruction.

Consult your Gastroenterologist and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
