Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff commonly affects the scalp apart from affecting other areas like face, chest, axilla etc.
For scalp seborrheic dermatitis, I usually ask my patients to use an antidandruff lotion/shampoo, e.g 2% ketoconazole thrice weekly for 2-4 weeks followed by twice weekly for maintenance.
Oily or greasy scales adherent to the scalp indicates severe dandruff. In such a case I also prescribe a topical steroid lotion twice daily to be applied at the scalp skin for 2-4 weeks along with an antidandruff shampoo.
Once the dandruff is controlled, steroid lotion can be discontinued. The improvement thus achieved can then be maintained by regular use of an antidandruff shampoo.
take care regards
