Are Benzonatate And Tylenol The Right Medications For Phlegm Filled Cough And Fever?

I have a cold with thick greenish phlegm, coughing, and fever. The last time I took my temperature it was 99.9 degrees Farenheit. I am taking Benzonatate 100 mg 3 times a day and Tylenol 500mg every 4 hours. I want to know if I am doing the right thing since I am using the medication prescribed several months ago for a similar condition. thank you.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Benzonatate is a cough suppressant meaning that it reduces coughing. Since your cough is productive of mucus, stopping the cough may stop the infectious mucus from being expelled.

You may want to consider a mucolytic to help break up the mucus so that it can come out easier. eg mucomyst, bisolvan, guaifenesin. These are over the counter medications.
Fluids would also help with this.

The cough suppressant can be used when you have to go to work or go out so that you do not cough too much.

You may also need an antibiotic if there is no improvement.

I hope this helps
