Are Flaxseeds Advisable While On Cholestyramine Prescribed For Diarrhea?
I have crown s disease and take cholestryamine, 1 tsp. a.m. with juice to control diarrhea. I had a partial bowel obstruction, and CT scan showed lots of stool still in the bowel. My gastroenterologist has prescribed 2 tbls. of ground flaxseed each a.m. I am confused. One medicine prevents diarrhea, and the flaxseed encourages elimination.
Hello , Welcome to healthcaremagic.com and thanks for sharing your concern with us . Your Doctor's strategy is quite correct . As you have crohn's disease and I think you also have got ileal resection (which is responsible for bile acid reabsorption) which is the cause of such diarrhea . The main function of cholestyramine is to inactivate the bile acids so it becomes osmotically inactive and does not cause diarrhea when reaches to large bowel . Cholestyramine causes constipation and bowel obstruction also as a side effect . To come out of this constipation and obstruction issue flaxseed is given . Continue the treatment as prescribed , it will help you definitely. I wish you good health. Best Regards , Dr.S.Tomar
